CDC Says New York Could Have Several Hundred Cases of Polio

According to officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, New York may already have several hundred asymptomatic cases of polio.

Dr. José Romero said that the presence of polio that was reported in July indicates that there may be “several Hundred cases in the community circulating.”  Romero has voiced concerns about the possibility of an epidemic due to the “silent” spread of the virus since most people infected are asymptomatic.

Public health officials in New York are urging the public to get up to date with their vaccinations.  In London, children are recommended to take a polio vaccine booster after indications from sewage samples that the virus is continuing to spread.

Polio paralyzes less than one percent of the children it infects.  The variant that once paralyzed and killed millions has been nearly eradicated by a global vaccination campaign.
